St. Peter’s Italian Bazaar is celebrating its 98th year of bringing our community together and Bruno’s is delighted to be a part of it once again! On Friday, August 9th and Saturday August 10th, we’ll be celebrating Italian-American culture with our friends and neighbors on Federal Street. Stop by and enjoy games (with prizes!), live music and, the freshest, most delicious Italian food from Bruno’s. The festival starts at 9 a.m. and ends at 5:30 p.m. on both days. That means you have plenty of time each day to enjoy the summer and try some of our famous ravioli!
St Rocco, The Patron Saint Of Dogs
The outdoor festival coincides with the feast of St. Rocco, a Catholic tradition. St Rocco was a nobleman from France in the 1300s who gave away all his earthly possessions and made a pilgrimage to Rome where he found the population suffering from a terrible epidemic. There, he chose to devote himself to the sick and suffering.
St. Rocco is the patron saint of many things, including surgeons, pilgrims and bachelors. He’s also the patron saint of dogs! During his pilgrimage he was banished from Italy after contracting the illness he had fought so hard to eradicate. He was lying on the ground, close to death, when a dog found him and fetched his owner to bring aid. Hundreds of years later we feast to celebrate St. Rocco’s life of selflessness and charity… but we also feast to celebrate dogs.
All Are Welcome
You don’t have to be Catholic or Italian-American to take part in the festivities. Everyone is invited to join in on the celebration! This tradition honors Italian heritage, but it’s also a tradition that honors our joyful life within this vibrant community. Portland is home to many people from different cultures and backgrounds that make our city so special. So make your own little pilgrimage to our table on Federal Street on August 9th and 10th. Dogs are also welcome.
