Bring On The Basil!

July 25, 2024

It’s difficult to imagine a traditional Italian meal without the warming aroma of basil. This delicious herb can be grown year round, but it flourishes in the summer. Basil is one of the simplest herbs to grow at home and there’s no easier or more satisfying way to enliven a dish. Basil is a staple ingredient in our kitchen and we use it in everything from our Mozzarella Pomodoro to our Grilled Caprese Sandwich and everything in between.

Growing Basil At Home

If you’re new to gardening, basil is possibly the best place to start. This herb thrives on sunlight and does well in an outdoor garden. It also grows well indoors, especially in southern facing rooms that receive plenty of light.

Basil needs moist soil to thrive. Natural rain is the easiest way to water basil, but if the air is especially dry or if you plan to grow basil indoors, be sure to water about once a week. After a month or so you’ll have plenty of fresh-scented, aromatic herbs to dress up a home cooked meal, Italian style.

And guess what? Basil is also a natural bug repellent, for anyone seeking a chemical-free solution to Summer mosquitos!

Pesto, Please!

You can’t go wrong with fresh pesto and the key ingredient is basil. If you’re familiar with our Chicken Pesto Pizza or Pesto Spaghetti, you know how much we love this italian condiment paste made with fresh basil, garlic, pine nuts, extra-virgin olive oil, and parmesan cheese. It’s easy to find recipes for pesto online, but if you want to try making traditional pesto, without a blender or food processor, this recipe will show you the authentic way to make pesto as it was originally prepared in Italy.

Of course, you can always stop by Bruno’s and enjoy the taste of fresh Summer basil with our own original recipes! However you choose to celebrate this historic herb, we hope you have a happy (and scrumptious) dining experience.
