Or, in Italian, buona Pasqua!
As we usually are on Sundays, Bruno’s will be closed on Easter and all of our staff who celebrate can enjoy the holiday with their families. From church services to Easter egg hunts to a special dinner, there are many wonderful traditions to enjoy.
In many Italian-American families, Easter celebrations may include some foods that are only made at Easter. Food is always an important part of any celebration! Two common Easter foods are pizzagaina (also called pizza rustica) and pane di pasqua.
Pizzagaina translates to ‘stuffed pie,’ an apt name, as the dish is rich and literally stuffed with meat and cheese. Recipes can vary by family, but at its core pizzagaina is chunks of ham, sausage, and/or pepperoni with melted cheese baked into an egg mixture atop a light crust. If it sounds filling, that’s because it is – and it’s especially a treat for people who have been fasting for Lent.
Pane di pasqua is Easter bread. It’s a braided bread with whole eggs in the shell baked into the loaf. Some loaves are shaped into a wreath and have one egg in the center, or several eggs around the circle. The bread can also be strands of dough braided straight, with eggs in the different braid segments. Eggs can be visible, baked on top of the loaf, or hidden and baked within the bread itself.
Hungry yet? Whether you’re enjoying treats like pizzagaina and pane di pasqua, or different traditional dishes from your family, all of us at Bruno’s hope you have a wonderful Easter weekend!
